Does Acesulfame-K Spike Insulin?

Acesulfame-K (Acesulfame Potassium, Ace-K) is one of the most widely used zero-calorie artificial sweeteners in the global food and beverage industry. With a sweetness intensity 200 times higher than sucrose, stable chemical properties, and excellent high-temperature resistance, it is extensively applied in carbonated drinks, baked goods, confectionery, dairy products, and functional food raw material trade. For global food manufacturers, ingredient suppliers, and import and export traders, the core concern of Ace-K application lies in its metabolic impact, especially whether it will trigger insulin spikes and affect blood sugar balance, which directly determines its market compliance and consumer acceptance.

 

Based on authoritative clinical trials and food nutrition research, pure acesulfame-K does not cause significant insulin spikes in the human body. Different from sucrose, fructose and other nutritive sugars that are metabolized to produce blood sugar fluctuations, Ace-K is a non-nutritive sweetener. Although individual high-dose in vitro experiments show that ultra-high concentration Ace-K may activate taste receptor signals and cause slight insulin fluctuation, such dosage far exceeds the daily edible standard stipulated by international food safety institutions (FAO/WHO) and cannot be replicated in daily food consumption scenarios.

 

It is worth noting that the misleading perception that "Ace-K causes insulin spikes" mostly comes from compound sweetener products. In commercial food formulas, Ace-K is often compounded with sucralose, aspartame and other sweeteners. A small number of compound formula products may cause subtle changes in gut hormone levels such as GLP-1, resulting in mild insulin fluctuation, but the fluctuation range is within the normal physiological range and has no negative impact on human blood sugar regulation and metabolic health.
